The Carotid artery ultrasonogrphy"s Usefulness for the prediction of ischemic brain vessel disease

Abstract
Purpose : Recently, the risk of stroke is on the rise, Medical Health Care is widely spread for early occur and prevention. Usually, for diagnosing atherosclerosis, we test brain vessel MRA and CAU(carotid artery ultrasonography). However, it states that MRA is expensive and many patients have the curiosity for the need of the test. So to use CAU, that has many advantage like cost affection and exam reproducibility, and estimate the connection between IMT(Carotid artery intima-medial thickness) and plaque(over 1.3mm of atherosclerotic lesion), and then to know the percentage of ischemia brain vessel disease incidence to excel brain stroke risk.

Materials and methods : We check whether or not IMT and plaque thickness is true targeting the patients who got CAU and brain MRA in Samung Medical Center from July 1st to September 30th,andanalyze brain vessel disease present or not comparison and connection throughout MRA diagnosis result.

Results : It shows that Men are 196 persons, women are 45 persons and average age is 56.7 targeting total 241 patients. By the sex, the average fact of CCA DIST IMT(CDI:Common carotid artery Distal Intima-Medial Thickness) is that men show 0.734¡¾0.181 and women show 0.726¡¾0.161, no difference for the sex. It shows that no difference for the sex when comparing with the base on CDI average 1.0mm. And ,for the age group, CDI average value go to the high by increasing the age, then when comparing CDI divide by 1.0mm standard, the target patients who are over 1.0mm CDI show high for over 70 age , 40, 50, and 60 age. For the comparison between CDI average value and over 1.3mm plaque present or not, CDI average shows the increase for the group of over 1.3mm plaque, and shows the statistical significance during the comparison with the sort by CDI 1.0mm standard. For the comparison between CDI average value, over 1.3mm plaque, and brain vessel disease present or not, brain vessel disease incidence shows the increase by increasing CDI average value, and no difference that the connection with over 1.3mm plaque. However, it shows the clear difference incidence almost 7 times for CDI 1.0mm standard compared with the time of 0.8mm(p<0.01).

Conclusions : IMT and plaque have close connection, and we know that shows significance for the index of brain vessel disease incidence prediction. Especially, IMT measurement method by using CAU shows clear significance when IMT is over 1.0mm also is helpful to sort out and the need of brain vessel test. Also we think that CAU could be the base data to develop the model that cost effective and to help protecting retinitis ischemia brain vessel disease.
